FJFW 2019 Designer Information

Fiji Fashion Week is widely recognized as being the most innovative and creative fashion event in the Pacific region. Now in its 12th year, Fiji Fashion Week is looking forward to a stellar future as we embark on a new era - retaining our international standards and taking fashion in Fiji into the Future.

The year 2018 has been our most successful to date, amazing and fun with our Emerging Designers stealing the show.

We’ve reached new heights with our event and helped boost designers and their businesses along the way. In case you missed it, FJFW in 2018 looked like this:

  1. January - The creation of a gorgeous new group of Australian trained emerging designers in “Nicks 6 Pack” by Nicholas Huxley

  2. February - Buckingham Palace – Commonwealth Fashion Council Meet, Ellen Whippy-Knight invited to promote Fashion in Fiji

  3. Fiji Fashion Week officially recognised as a founding member of the Commonwealth Fashion Council based in London

  4. May - FJFW 2018 and our amazing 7 lane runway, a first in the Pacific (including NZ and Australia)

  5. Designers -More than 50 including designers from India, China, Australia, Vietnam, Solomon Islands and of course, Fiji

  6. Yasayasa Moala Junior Secondary School participates in the much loved Students Designer Show for the first time assisted by the Digitaki-Weilakeba Family Trust.

  7. Models – 70+ beautiful models with plenty of new faces and internationals like Louis Ova (NZ) in his first appearance for a Fijian fashion event.

  8. International Media including Dan Ahwa, Viva Magazine & top Fashion Photographer Sonny Vandevelde exclusively at FJFW

  9. November - Fijian Fashion Foundation, a Not for Profit organisation launched in Sydney, its major objective is to create opportunities for Fijian designers.

  10. Laisiasa Davetawalu gains an internship with internationally acclaimed designer, Akira Isogawa and offered a place in the Bachelor of Fashion Design at TAFE Ultimo Sydney – an amazing first for a Fijian Designer

  11. December - Ellen Whippy-Knight invited by Donghua University to attend the inaugural International Universities Fashion & Textile Conference in Shanghai as part of China’s One Road One Belt Initiative

  12. FJFW has obtained four internships with Australian companies for locals working in the fashion and creative industries AND with Donghua University in Shanghai has fashion scholarships on offer.

OUR runway experience 2019

FJFW showcases collections from emerging and established brands. Our focus in 2019 is on building the profile of RESORT WEAR within the region. FJFW understands global trends and we recognize market opportunities. There is currently no larger global market than RESORT and it has so many synergies with our tropically-infused lifestyle and tourism industry. If you want to share your talent, innovation and creativity to a global audience - then our runway is for you!

FJFW is a collections show with all designers appearing on the main runway. A select panel of industry professionals will choose 15 designers per show, with each designer showing capsule collections of between 12 - 15 looks. Each show includes a balance of emerging and established designers, with the style of your collection determining the show. Our shows this year are:

FJFW 2019 will be held on Monday 20 – Saturday 25 May at the FMF Gymnasium – the recently refurbished indoor stadium with a fantastic urban feel. Wooden floors, high ceilings, on floor and stadium seating.

Our venue will be transformed into a lush tropical wonderland with every guest having a fabulous view of each show. FJFW2019 will be produced by a team of event and industry specialists whose shared vision will attract significant local and international media coverage.

FJFW has always been the show for the people with over 800 people in attendance for each show, including local and international media, buyers, VIPs and paying guests. Fiji TV our major media sponsor will live stream FJFW’s shows globally at not cost to viewers increasing international exposure for Designers, Models and Fiji.

 

designer selection

Designer selection is by consideration of the information you include in your online application which will ask for information about your label, your design experience, and your concept for your collection. If requested

  • you must be available to attend on online or face-to-face interview with the Designer Relations Manager and / or the FJFW Designer Selection Advisory Panel

  • submit a sample from your collection

  • you must attend the Designer Preparation Workshops with FJFW Ambassador and fashion educator Mr Nicholas Huxley. Workshops focus on preparation of your collection to international standards and are free of charge.

Designer applications will be reviewed by the FJFW Designer Relations Manager and FJFW Designer Selection Advisory Panel who will consider applications based upon the following criteria:

Is the application for a Resort collection within the following categories

Womenswear

Menswear

Swimwear

Athleisure

Couture

What is the level of design experience

If an emerging designer, do you have less than 3 years experience and not retailing?

If an established designer, do you have more than 3 years experience and an established client base through traditional retail outlets or online sales?

Is the design concept innovative and unique

Is there a sufficient level of design detail?

Does the collection meet a market niche and / or have commercial appeal?

Is the collection produced to industry quality standards

Fabric selection suits design

Samples use appropriate finishes

Print or dye techniques are appropriate to fabric and long lasting.

designer fees

Fees include

  • One model per garment look to the maximum for your showcase

  • Hair & make-up team with beauty look decided by FJFW

  • A pre-scheduled group fitting (group fitting will be scheduled the week of the event – attendance is mandatory)

  • Venue and staging

  • Show production, sound and lighting

  • Event administration

  • Promotion of your participation using FJFW online and media partners, including

  • a link to your brand’s media on the FJFW website

  • Fiji TV to live stream show worldwide

  • Electronic photos of runway collection

  • Access to the FJFW Designer Portal which will provide you with up-to-date information about the show, your models, FJFW media and more...

Optional

  • Individualized hair and makeup look at FJD100 per model

  • Guest tickets at FJD80 per ticket on pre-order

  • Designer mentoring with Mr Nicholas Huxley, Fashion Educator, Australia.

Payment terms

  • 50% payable within 7 days of confirmation that you are in the show

  • Balance to be finalized by 15 April to secure your place in the show

Designer Training

Nicholas Huxley Australian Fashion Educator and Consultant who successfully led and trained 6 Emerging Designers in 2018 will be back in 2019 in conjunction with FNU and Fashion Council of Fiji to provide further training to all Designers.
